Cathedral Chairs

For some time the idea of providing special chairs for use at weddings, baptisms, funerals and other special occasions in the Cathedral was under consideration. These would replace the rather poor blue folding chairs currently used.

This idea was followed up by the Society of Friends who offered to finance the project. It was agreed that the chairs should be specially commissioned and that eight chairs should be purchased. After investigation a design prepared by Stephen Hunter, a specialist chair maker was selected. He explained that the chairs should first be comfortable but at the same time should fit the atmosphere and surroundings of the Cathedral. The design was therefore kept quite simple with no decoration and with the top rail reflecting the cusp detail of the pew ends and the seats without upholstery. The wood is unstained oak in keeping with the pews. Stephen collects locally grown wood and had in stock a supply of seasoned Argyll oak which has been used for the chairs. Its interesting figuring adds to the appearance of the chairs.

On the upper rail of the chair back are carved the kind of human behaviour characteristics advised by St Paul in his letter to the Galatians. They are, Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Fidelity and Gentleness.

Donations towards the cost of the chairs have been received from a number of people in memory of loved ones and an oak plaque acknowledging this has been placed behind the screen at the East end of the Cathedral.
